PETALING JAYA: Wonderkid Nazmi Faiz Mansor is making the best of his trial with Portuguese Division One side Beira Mar.
The 17-year-old was in high spirits after his first session in Aveiro yesterday,
“I have adapted well to the new environment here. It isn’t much of problem and I feel good after my first workout with the team. Most of the players are physically bigger but that’s no excuse. I’m confident of making my mark and will give it my best shot during my short stay here,” said Nazmi in a telephone interview yesterday.
Nazmi received rave reviews for his performances with the national Under-23 squad in the Asian Zone Olympic final qualifying round. The diminutive midfielder also played a pivotal role in Malaysia retaining the gold medal at the Indonesia SEA Games last year.
He continued his fine form with the Harimau Muda in the Singapore League where he was noticed by football agent Marco Guimaraes of FMI Sports, who offered him a trial with the Portuguese club from May 13-21.
“So far, so good. We will see what happens in the next couple of days,” said Guimaraes.
National Under-23 coach Ong Kim Swee believes Nazmi would be a role model for young Malaysians.
“He’s paving the way for others. If foreign clubs find our footballers worthy, we will see more demand for our players abroad,” said Kim Swee.
Nazmi will resume training with the national Under-22 team in Budapest next week.
The team will be in Slovakia, Hungary and China for a series of warm-up matches until June 11.
They are preparing for the inaugural AFC Under-22 Asian Cup qualifier in Myanmar from June 23-July 3. Malaysia are drawn with South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, the Philippines and hosts Myanmar in Group G.
